How to Vet an Automotive Stampings Supplier: A Quality Inspector’s 5-Step Checklist

If you're sourcing automotive metal stamping parts, stamping dies, or CNC machined components, you've probably learned the hard way that not all supplier capabilities are created equal. I'm a quality compliance manager at a company that delivers these parts to OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Every quarter, I review roughly 60 unique die and part deliveries. In 2024 alone, I rejected about 12% of first submissions—mostly due to dimensional drift on high-volume runs or inconsistent surface finishes that would have caused assembly issues.

This checklist is for the engineer or buyer who needs to vet a new stamping partner. It's not a textbook process. It's the sequence I've refined after 200+ supplier audits.

Step 1: Verify the Die & Mold Design Capability

Most suppliers can stamp parts. Few can design and build the dies themselves. This is the first filter.

Ask for their die design engineers' experience. I look for a team that has designed progressive dies for high-strength steel or aluminum extrusions, not just simple mild steel parts. If they outsource die design, ask who does it and how the design transfer is managed.

A specific check I use: Request a sample of a die design review document. A real one will have revision history, risk notes (like springback compensation for high-strength steel), and sign-off from both tooling and production. If they send a template with no names or dates, that's a red flag.

Step 2: Audit the Quality Control Process for First Article Inspection

This is where most vendors drop the ball. It's tempting to think a first article inspection (FAI) is just a dimension check.

Here's what I ask for:

  • FAI procedure: Do they have a documented process for measuring critical-to-function dimensions? Or do they only measure what's easy?
  • CMM capability: For complex geometries, a CMM report with a detailed printout is non-negotiable. I've seen shops use calipers on parts that should be measured with an optical comparator.
  • Material cert traceability: Can they trace the lot number on the cert back to the specific coil or blank used in your part?

It took me about 3 years and 40 rejected shipments to understand that asking for their FAI process upfront weeds out 50% of the vendors who aren't ready for automotive-grade work. The ones who can walk you through their procedure—flaws and all—are usually the keepers.

Step 3: Evaluate Their Secondary Operations Capability

A stamping is rarely the final part. You'll likely need CNC machining, tapping, welding, or surface treatment. A supplier who handles these in-house saves you lead time and logistics headaches.

When I audit a supplier for a project that requires both stamping and CNC machining, I focus on the workflow between the press and the CNC cell. How are parts transferred? Is there a queue? Do they have a procedure to prevent mix-ups? Honestly, I'm not sure why so many shops treat this transition casually. My best guess is that each department operates in a silo. But for a $50,000 annual order, a mix-up that sends a stamped part to the wrong CNC program can cost you $8,000 in rework.

A practical check: Ask for the routing sheet for a similar multi-step part. It should list every operation, inspection point, and time estimate. A vague document is a bad sign.

Step 4: Request References for High-Volume Runs (and Check for Consistency)

I've learned to ask for references from clients who run 50,000+ units per year. A supplier can handle a 500-piece prototype run with low consistency requirements. The real test is whether they can hold tolerance over a 5-month production cycle.

When I call a reference, I ask: "Over a 6-month period, how many times did the die need maintenance, and how long did it take?" If the answer is "never" or "one day", I'm skeptical. Dies wear. The ones who tell you about a 3-day tooling fix that they documented and improved on are the honest ones.

On my team, we ran a blind comparison: same part, two suppliers, 10 random samples from each batch over 3 months. The supplier with the tighter Cpk (process capability index) had a die maintenance schedule that was more frequent but predictable. The other one chased problems reactively. Consistency.

Step 5: Understand Their Approach to Customer-Requested Changes

Changes happen. A drawing revision, a material substitution, a tighter tolerance. The way a supplier handles this tells you everything.

The scenario I use: "If I email a revision to the part drawing on a Tuesday, what happens next?"

A good supplier will describe a change order process with a review, a cost/schedule impact analysis, and an update to the FAI. A bad one will say "We'll just adjust the die." I've never fully understood why change management is so rare in stamping shops. It's not rocket science. But if the supplier doesn't have a formal change request form, you'll face surprises.

Bottom line on this step: The vendor who lists all fees upfront for a revision—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. The surprise "tool adjustment fee" that shows up later? That's the hidden cost.

A Few Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't over-index on low unit price. A stamping at $0.03 per piece delivered inconsistently will cost you more in line downtime than a $0.05 part from a reliable source.
  • Don't assume all "ISO 9001" certifications are equal. I've seen auditors pass shops with no real process control. Ask to see their internal audit results.
  • Don't skip the informal chat with the production manager. The sales team will tell you what you want to hear. The production manager will tell you the truth.

As of January 2025, these checks have saved our team from at least one major supplier failure per quarter. It's not a perfect system—I'm still figuring out how to evaluate new entrants in the aluminum extrusion space—but it's a solid starting point.
