From Air Filter Direction to Brake Hose Markings: What Four 'Simple' Car Questions Share

That job has taught me something that still surprises people: most emergency parts orders were avoidable, and the cause is rarely a bad part.

In March 2024, with 36 hours left before a client's deadline, a service manager called me about a brake hose. He had purchased what he believed was a genuine Centric Parts 150.66098 brake hose. The box had no branding. The printing on the hose was misaligned. The fitting carried no Centric logo. His question: “Can I install it anyway?”

That is not a question about a hose. It is the same question behind “which way does an air filter go?”, “distilled water for radiator top-ups?”, “can I run a catless exhaust system?”, and “how do I know a Centric logo is real?” These look like basic and unrelated questions. They aren't. Every one of them comes from treating a component as if it were the whole system.

The Pattern: A Part Is Only One Piece of a System

When someone asks me whether a no-name brake hose, a backwards air filter, tap water, or a converter delete is “okay,” I answer by explaining what surrounds that part. The system gives you the answer.

Which Way Does an Air Filter Go?

An air filter has an intended direction because most pleated media is not symmetrical. The intake side catches larger particles first; the clean side delivers air to the engine. If the filter is reversible by design, the housing and frame are usually symmetrical. If not, you look at the filter frame, where an arrow is often printed.

That arrow matters, but the label matters more. If the filter says “air flow,” the arrow points in the direction the air travels, usually toward the engine. If the filter says “front,” the arrow points toward the front of the vehicle, not necessarily toward the intake. Mixing those up is easy when you are in a hurry.

This is why the question “which way does the air filter go?” has a surprisingly high cost when answered incorrectly. A reversed filter can compromise the seal or force the media to work in the wrong direction. The result can be unfiltered air entering the engine and a contaminated mass airflow sensor, followed by expensive diagnostics trying to explain a mysterious running condition. Take a photo before you remove the old filter. It takes five seconds and removes the guesswork.

Distilled Water for Radiator: Yes, Because Cooling Is a System

Tap water is not the same as distilled water for radiator use. Distilled water has had the minerals removed. Minerals and ions in tap water raise the electrical conductivity of the coolant, which accelerates corrosion in a cooling system that contains aluminum, iron, and copper. Hard water also leaves scale inside the radiator, engine block, and heater core. Scale acts as an insulator and reduces the system's ability to shed heat.

That is not an argument for running pure distilled water, though. Pure water lacks corrosion inhibitors and has poor freeze and boil protection. The right approach is a proper coolant mixture, usually 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water, following the OEM specification. If the radiator is low and you have no coolant on hand, distilled water is a better temporary top-up than tap water. Just restore the correct coolant concentration afterward.

Catless Exhaust System: A Pipe Is Not a Tune

The catalytic converter sits in the middle of a control loop. The engine management system uses upstream and downstream oxygen sensors to monitor catalyst function and adjust fuel trim. Removing the catalyst changes those readings. On some vehicles, the result is a check-engine light and poor idle. On others, the engine may run acceptably for a while, then run richer or leaner when the computer loses confidence in the sensor data. Neither outcome is “free performance.”

There is also a legal layer. On a road vehicle in the U.S., removing a working catalytic converter is considered tampering with an emission control system under the Clean Air Act. Verify the current requirements at epa.gov. There are legitimate off-road and competition contexts where the engineering goal is different, but a catless exhaust system on a street car is not a simple parts swap. It is a system change with legal and calibration implications.

Markings and the Centric Logo: Traceability, Not Vanity

The same systems thinking applies to brake hoses. A brake hose is a safety-critical component that can see well over 1,000 psi during hard braking. Road-legal brake hoses in the U.S. are required to meet FMVSS 106, which includes performance requirements and marking rules. Those markings trace the hose back to manufacturing data: materials, batch, testing, and quality records.

When I compared a genuine Centric brake hose with a no-name hose side by side, I finally understood why the details matter so much. Same length, similar curve, but the crimp quality, bracket geometry, and markings were different. You cannot tell how a hose will age by looking at the outside. A hose that claims to be a Centric Parts 150.66098 brake hose but carries no logo and no traceable markings is not a deal. It is an unknown variable in a safety-critical system.

The expensive calls are rarely about the part itself. They are about the next component in the system. The problem comes down to a mental model. When you think of a component as a standalone part, you decide based on whether it fits and looks correct. When you think of the system, you ask what will happen to that part over time under pressure, temperature, and contamination.

  • Distilled water for radiator? Yes, use distilled water when diluting coolant concentrate. Do not use water alone as coolant, and do not use tap water as the long-term solution.
  • Catless exhaust system? For a street vehicle, no. The converter is part of the emissions control system and removing it is both a legal and calibration problem. For a dedicated track vehicle, plan for tuning and verify the rules of your class.
  • Brake hose with no Centric logo? Be cautious. A genuine Centric Parts 150.66098 brake hose should be confirmed against the vehicle application, and the logo and packaging should look consistent with a legitimate product. If the part cannot be traced to a manufacturer, you are buying an unknown.

I am not claiming every unmarked hose will fail immediately. Some aftermarket hoses are built to a legitimate standard. But if a product claims to be Centric and lacks the Centric logo, or you cannot trace the batch, be honest about what you know and what you don't. Put another way: don't buy an unknown component for a system that relies on known behavior.

There are also cases where my recommendation changes. If you are building a track-only car, a racing-specific brake hose or a different exhaust calibration may be the correct choice. If your cooling system has a special requirement, follow the OEM or the component manufacturer's specification for that build. Different applications, different standards. The point is to know which system you are actually working on.

Bottom line: the next time a part looks fine, ask what system it belongs to. You will spend less, sleep better, and create far fewer 36-hour emergencies for the person on the other end of the phone.
